Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff: In the Bull of Indiction of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 Incarnationis Mysterium (=IM), His Holiness Pope John Paul II speaks of certain signs which have enriched the celebration of the Jubilee throughout history. He mentions in particular the sign of the Holy Door (IM 8).The Holy Father had already emphasized in Tertio Millennio Adveniente (=TMA), the special importance of the Holy Door in the Jubilee of 2000: "The Holy Door of the Jubilee of the Year 2000 should be symbolically wider than those of previous Jubilees, because humanity, upon reaching this goal, will leave behind not just a century but a millennium" (TMA 33).
The rite of the consignment and the reading of the Bull of Indiction of the Great Jubilee took place on the First Sunday of Advent 1998 in the atrium of the Vatican Basilica, in front of the Holy Door itself. The Door, although closed, was appropriately decorated for the occasion, as if to indicate to all the attitude of contemplation and positive hope with which the Church has long been preparing to cross the threshold of the Jubilee of the Year 2000.
The importance of the sign of the Door during the Jubilee of 2000 will also find ritual expression: for the first time in the history of the Holy Years, the Pope will personally open all four Doors of the Roman Basilicas.

Office des Célébrations liturgiques du Souverain Pontife: Dans la Bulle d'indiction du grand Jubilé de l'An 2000, Incarnationis Mysterium (IM), le Saint-Père rappelle certains symboles dont s'est enrichi l'institution du jubilé au cours de son histoire. Il s'arrête en particulier sur le symbole de la Porte Sainte.
Il avait déjà souligné dans Tertio millennio adveniente (TMA) l'importance particulière de la Porte Sainte dans le Jubilé de l'An 2000: "La Porte Sainte du Jubilé devra être symboliquement plus large que les précédentes car l'humanité, arrivée à ce terme, laissera derrière elle non seulement un siècle mais un millénaire" (TMA, n. 33).
Le rite de remise et de lecture de la Bulle d'indiction du grand Jubilé, qui s'est déroulé le premier dimanche de l'Avent 1998 dans l'atrium de la basilique vaticane, a voulu lui aussi rappeler l'attention sur ce signe fort du Jubilé. Le Pape s'est arrêté en prière devant la Porte Sainte, encore fermée mais décorée de façon adéquate pour l'occasion, comme pour indiquer à tous l'attitude de contemplation et d'espérance concrète avec laquelle l'Eglise s'est préparée depuis longtemps à franchir le seuil du grand Jubilé de l'An 2000.
L'importance du symbole de la porte dans le Jubilé de l'An 2000 sera exprimée également par le moment rituel: pour la première fois dans l'histoire des années saintes, le Pape ouvrira personnellement les quatre portes des basiliques romaines.

Ufficio delle Celebrazioni Liturgiche del Sommo Pontefice: Nella Bolla di indizione del Grande Giubileo del 2000 Incarnationis Mysterium (=IM) il Santo Padre ricorda alcuni segni di cui si è arricchito l’istituto del Giubileo nella sua storia. E in particolare si sofferma sul segno della porta santa (IM 8).
Egli aveva già sottolineato nella Tertio Millennio Adveniente (=TMA) la particolare importanza della porta santa nel Giubileo del 2000: "La porta santa del Giubileo del 2000 dovrà essere simbolicamente più grande delle precedenti, perché l’umanità, giunta a quel traguardo, si lascerà alle spalle, non soltanto un secolo, ma un millennio" (TMA 33).
Anche il rito di consegna e di lettura della Bolla di indizione del Grande Giubileo, svoltosi la prima domenica di Avvento 1998 nell’atrio della Basilica Vaticana proprio davanti alla porta santa, ha voluto richiamare l’attenzione su questo segno forte del Giubileo. Il Papa ha sostato in preghiera davanti alla Porta santa, ancora chiusa ma per la circostanza convenientemente ornata, quasi ad indicare a tutti l'atteggiamento di contemplazione e di fattiva speranza con cui la Chiesa da tempo si è preparata varcare la soglia del Grande Giubileo del 2000.
L’importanza del segno della porta nel Giubileo del 2000 sarà espressa anche dal momento rituale: per la prima volta nella storia degli anni santi il Papa aprirà personalmente tutte e quattro le porte delle basiliche romane.
